Unexpected

I got up this morning because I had to help my sister. Her car needed brakes and she needed to take it in by 8 am. Hopefully, it could be done in time for her to go to work. Since I work second shift, I’m not usually up that early. I drag myself out of bed, go to the bathroom, and finally throw on some clothes.

She calls me to make sure I’m awake (oh yeah). I walk outside to my car and notice how bright it is. When you’re a vampire used to getting off work at night, the sun can get to ya. I marvel at the color of the leaves on the trees as I driving down the highway. I watch as the dew is slowly being burned away by the sun’s heat. As I get closer to the river, I see the fog shimmering in a white haze as it lifts up.

I’m looking at all these things as I’m driving to get my sister. It dawned on me that it’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed looking at this type of scene. I wanted to whip out my phone and take a picture of all that I was seeing. But I was doing 60 on the highway and that wouldn’t have been a good idea. Seeing those picturesque views this morning made me want to express to the world how beautiful it was. Sometimes we just need a little reminder of what has been there all along.   via Daily Prompt: Express

Chair Exercising

I was thinking about different exercises that people could do and thought of older people and people with limited mobility. I’ve had problems with my knees and feet for years, so I’m always looking for an exercise that won’t hurt me. I prefer to do any type of workout at home these days. I never know when my knee will try and throw me on the floor………hahahahahaha.

My grandmother and my sister used to do chair exercises. You get a chair, sit on the edge of it, and do leg and arm exercises. There are seated Jumping Jacks, Ab Twister, Seated Leg Extensions, Seated Press Ups and workouts that include using a water bottle or two. Here’s a link that explains those exercises……https://www.grandparents.com/health-and-wellbeing/exercise-and-de-stress/chair-exercises

I was also looking through YouTube videos for chair exercise videos and found a few. The first one I found is a 20-minute workout with a guy and girl. The guy is using hands weights and the girl is doing the same moves without weights. The moves are easy enough. I think I might do these types of moves in my spare time. Here is the link to the 20-minute chair exercise video on YouTube……..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azv8eJgoGLk

This last video that I’ll post a link to is seniors doing chair exercises. These moves are also very simple and easy. I found myself moving along with the video without thinking about. It was just so simple. The moves were also stretching out my tired muscles since I had just got off work. I know what videos I’ll be saving in YouTube. Here is the link to this video……….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7zCDiiTBTk

Hopefully, these videos will be helpful to someone. I found them to be quite helpful to me. I’m always open to new things in the exercise world as long as it won’t hurt me. Until next time, I’ll be on the lookout for new things to post.

One Day at the store…..

I went to the store the other day to find some cooking oil. I was hoping to get some olive oil or even coconut oil. I wanted to cook some stir-fry pork to go with my rice. I don’t deep fry anything anymore because I’m trying to cut down on the amount of grease I take in.

While browsing the baking aisle, I noticed a cooking spray. It was a coconut cooking spray. I stood looking at it mesmerized. It was just what I was looking for. I really didn’t want to buy a bottle of oil because it would have gone to waste. But this spray, ohhhh this spray, can be used to just to give my ceramic pan a coating. A coating of spray and I’m cooking away.

So I got it home and tried it out. It worked really great. An added bonus was that it gave the meat a boost of flavor. And the kitchen smelled wonderful. I will definitely use this spray with beef and shrimp. Here’s what it looks like…….

Monday Blahs

I see that a lot of people don’t seem to like Mondays because it’s the beginning of the work week. It’s also the end of the weekend.  I happen to like Mondays because it’s another day to be alive. I can start this Monday finding new things to do.

I made it to 40 minutes on my elliptical (41 minutes and 18 seconds to be exact…..hahahahaha) so I’m happy about that. I saw an article on Facebook about drinking pickle juice to get rid of cramps. I was having a problem with leg cramps about a year and a half ago. I ended up getting some Himalayan salt. I mixed a little with a glass of water and lo and behold, my leg cramps went away. But if anyone wants to try pickle juice, here’s that link……https://www.littlethings.com/benefits-of-pickle-juice/?utm_source=LTts&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=health.

I was at Walmart and those king size Nestle Crunch bars were calling me. What I got instead was a couple of tomatoes and a container of low-fat cottage cheese. I can eat a cup of cottage cheese and a couple of slices of tomato for a healthy snack instead of that Crunch bar. I’m slowly looking for alternative healthy things to eat.

When I had lost the 28 pounds a few years ago, I was eating rice steamers. I would get the Birds Eye Steamfresh that had vegetables in them. The one that I would get the most had brown and wild rice, broccoli and carrots in it. You put in the microwave for 5 minutes and BAM, it done. You may want to season it to taste because I’ll be honest, it is quite bland. I put a little butter, Himalayan salt and pepper flakes on it. I also eat it with either some sort of fish, beef or pork with it. It’s quick to make and it’s pretty light as far as eating.

I’m going to start posting helpful things as far as tricks to losing weight and good foods and recipes to eat. My goal is to lose 5 pounds a month. All the other times I tried to lose weight I didn’t really have a goal in mind. I just wanted to lose weight any way possible. I figure if I go slowly, then I can progress as I go along. I also won’t feel so bad if I notice that my weight hasn’t moved down any. I’ve had this extra weight for 24 years. I have to think realistically that it’s not going to magically go away overnight.

A Little About Me

I’ve talked a little about losing weight. So let me talk a bit about myself. I’m 46 yrs, 5’6″ tall and weigh 271. Well, I did weigh 271 when I started using the elliptical in August. I weigh about 267 now (Whooo Hooo). The goal I working towards is losing 5 pounds a month. If I lose more that’s great, but I want to at least lose something each month.

I’m starting out just exercising a little. Right now I try to get on elliptical every other day. So far I’ve been able to stay on it for at least 35 minutes. The last time I was using it, oh maybe about a year ago, I was trying to have a go at it every day. I realized that I was pushing myself too hard and eventually lost interest. So now I’m going slow.

The elliptical trainer that I have is a Nordic Track CX 998. It’s manually powered but it does have a screen that can be plugged in that lights up and keeps track of everything. I’m still learning the settings on it. In fact, I went to Google and downloaded the user’s manual so I can attempt to figure out how to work a lot of these settings. As of right now, I just plug it up and use it. Once I feel I’m ready for a harder workout, I’ll change the settings.

The best thing I did was buy a fan. My son killed my poor box fan so the last attempt at exercising was kind of miserable. The Nordic Track does have a little fan that blows air in the face, but it’s not enough. I got an oscillating fan with three speeds to blow more air my way. I usually have my patio door open to get more air in, but lately there just hasn’t been a good breeze blowing. The fan has helped a lot during my work out.

I haven’t really started any type of meal planning yet. There are already quite a few things that I don’t have in my diet. I don’t drink any type of pop/soda (I quit drinking it 17 years ago) rarely buy chips, ice cream, or any other types of sweets. I’m slowly leaving fast food places alone (the food really is starting to suck). One problem that I do have is that I’m extremely lazy. I can cook, but I just don’t want to. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to do better meal planning wise if I want to lose weight better. And it really is cheaper to make your own food.

My big craving is chocolate. I really, really like it. Right now I’m into the king-sized Nestle Crunch bars. They are so great to me. I could eat one a day if I had the chance. So I’m trying to wean myself off of them. It’s hard because………THEY KEEP CALLING ME!!! But I’m sure I’ll one day soon be able to let them go. Oh and I absolutely love chocolate chip cookies. But they have to be GOOD chocolate chip cookies. My sister makes the big ones that are oh so good. If I wasn’t so lazy, I’d make my own…….hahahahahaha.

Starting Again

This is my 5,000th attempt at making a go at losing weight……..LOL. But I don’t want to give up on it. I’m getting older and my body isn’t handling the extra weight as well anymore. So I’m giving it a go again.

Where to start again? Well, I have an elliptical trainer sitting in my living room that I’ve been using as a coat rack.  I had begged my brother for years to let me get it from him. He had graduated to using a treadmill and didn’t use the elliptical anymore. Finally about two years ago he gave it to me. And it sat in the middle of my living room for months. One day I got on it. Wow, it was really easy to use and was gentle on my knees.

I worked out on it for about three months off and on and then I just stopped. I didn’t really have a reason. I just didn’t have any motivation to exercise. The elliptical trainer became a coat rack again. About a little over two months ago I had seen this video of a 73-year-old woman bodybuilder who looked absolutely fabulous. I began to wonder how come I was watching her video and not doing something myself? So…….this past August I slowly started working out again.

I had lost about 28 pounds in 2014. I did that by doing the Zumba games on the Wii. I didn’t want to go to a gym because I’d be paying a fee for nothing. I already knew I wouldn’t go. I already owned a Wii and had been excited seeing Zumba classes on the internet. So I figured I’d buy the games and do them at home.

I was happy with the weight loss and that I was managing to keep it off. But at the beginning of 2015, my aunt was hit by a car and died four days later. I went into a deep mourning because my aunt was like my best friend. I talked to her at least 3 times a day almost every day. I tried to go out walking on the trails or still do Zumba, but it just seemed like everything reminded me of her. So I gradually stopped doing any kind of work out and eventually gained back the weight I lost. Except for five pounds. I’m proud to say I’ve kept those five pounds off…..hahahaha.

Now I would like to lose the original weight I lost and even more if possible. I have plenty of weight to lose, but I want to do it slowly because I don’t want it to come back. It’s past time to do something permanent about it since I’m not getting any younger. But I do know it will take time.

Here we go!

Here we go!

Hi readers! I have had thoughts on and off about writing a blog. So today I finally got the courage to do it. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to blog about. But today while I was on my elliptical trainer, it hit me. Why not blog about my journey to try and lose weight. I know there are many other people out there blogging about weight loss. But that’s OK. Everyone’s journey is different. And maybe, just maybe, I can inspire just one person to want to go on a weight loss journey with me.
